NB
Note: The full sized files of the display templates were too large to be uploaded to my blog so I have had to upload smaller condensed files. I still have the original large template files on disc!

pro:four. Popular Peace.
The Brief:
Create a brand identity solution for a platform website that accumulates and disseminates research data to be gathered from post-conflict countries specifically concerned with what the population would prioritise for peace if it were given the choice.
The website will act as a research source for peace building scholars and policy makers. The idea involves the ‘civilizing’ of peace building around genuinely democratic processes – rather than just holding elections and then leaving it to chance and charity. Elections are just a technical processes. approach assumes a deeper approach to the social reality of millions of extremely vulnerable people. It presumes that the people in post conflict spaces have to be heard in order for them to participate meaningfully. The website communicates their priorities to the outside world so they might provide what people want, rather than what we believe they should have.

polaroids?
I want to use polaroids to display the photography in my display board. I drew out a template and then added it to my layout:

My interview...
hello my name is catherine. my earliest memory is when i was two years old and my baby sister gina had been brought home from hospital...
i was sitting on the sofa in my living room, facing the window, and she was on my knee... i was afraid i was going to break her. my mum and dad were taking photographs of us. i remember being happy that i had a new sister and i loved her, but i can’t remember what she looked like, it’s all just a blur in my memory. i do remember i was wearing blue dungarees and wee black patent shoes. there are many photographs of this particular memory and sometimes i’m not sure if i can actually remember it or if i have just seen the photos so many times that i imagine i remember it.
researching interesting magazine layout designs
I'm really liking the simple black & white theme, with maybe just one other colour, as I think it is classic and clean and looks professional. I also want to incorporate photography into my editorial design, in both my display board, and my actual magazine spread.

pro: three- A Visual Narrative
Real or fictitious early memory...
Basically this brief involves recording someones early memory and turn this into either a video or an editorial design piece.
My idea:
I wanted to do something different for my interview and had lined up a friend who was fluent in sign language to tell me about her earliest memory. This original plan fell through and so, running with the sign language theme, I have decided to interview myself and record my interview using the sign-language alphabet...

Experimenting with Type.
I was playing around with type positioning, but found that because some of the words were wonky, it looked very unprofessional, so I tried again with all the words straight:
I wanted to create an effect where it looked like all the water-related diseases were being washed down the drain, so I layered the text over an image I had taken of a sink:
At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from a water-related disease. [http://www.water.cc/].

Mock up.
Another mock up of a poster I created for the 'water is life' brief, in the style of 'a softer world' as researched below.
I like how this has turned out but it still needs a lot of work done to it re: text placement, spacing between images, border effects and image composition.

A Softer World.
"A Softer World is a comic that was created by Emily Horne and Joey Comeau so that people would recognize them as important artistic geniuses. Sometimes the "comic" is sad or harsh. It should be noted that this is in the tradition of George Simenon's 'romans durs' (or 'hard novels') and not in the lesser traditions of comics like Peanuts or anything else not French. Comeau is a French name. (Pronounced kuh-moe, by the way. Joey is very important, please say his name correctly. Emily is also very important but her name is easier to pronounce.) "This is one of my favourite websites. I like their use of photography to get across messages, with little captions, in a cartoon-strip style. The messages they portray are both tongue-in cheek... I'd like to try to incorporate their style into my photography poster, but make it more serious.
Some examples of their work:
You can view an archive of their work at: http://www.asofterworld.com/archive.php
My photos...
I decided to take these photographs (see previous post) in black and white, to make them more striking. I took these photos in the dark and used a flash, and i like the way they have turned out kinda gritty. I think this fits in with the project well, as it is a serious matter I want my photos to look serious and send out a message.
